I think most of us enjoy a change of scenery from time to time, and fishing is no different. One place I really enjoy is the Milburnie Dam on the Neuse river in Raleigh.
The dam is about a twenty minute drive from my house, so it's an easy trip. The only fish I've caught there are channel catfish and flathead catfish, but there should be bass, shad, bowfin, gar, and bream in the river. There is a canoe launch if one cares to paddle on the water.
I like to go during the week when there are fewer people along the shore. It gets crowded on the weekends, but I've never been on a Saturday.
I like the dam, despite the garbage that's left behind by less appreciative anglers. It's one of those spots where you can recharge. Even if I don't catch anything, I still enjoy sitting on the bank, listening to the water rushing over the giant brick monolith on its way to the Atlantic.
There's not much that can compare to the excitement you feel when a 20 pound catfish makes the tip of your fishing rod bounce, but the calm between strikes is something that should never be overlooked.
